Cincinnati, OH – August 7, 2023 – Sinclair Broadcast Group is pleased to announce WKRC in Cincinnati has been honored with several awards for its 60-minute documentary special on Sister Blandina Segale, a Cincinnati nun. “Sister Blandina Segale: A Cincinnati Saint” was honored with an Emmy Award, an Ohio Associated Press Award – First Place, an SPJ Cincinnati Chapter Award – First Place and a national Gabriel Award.
Currently a candidate for sainthood, Sister Blandina (1850 –1941), was a Sister of Charity Cincinnati missionary who became widely known for her service across the American frontier in the late 19th century.
In the 60-minute documentary on her life and legacy, Local 12 tracked her journey from Cincinnati to the Santa Fe Trail and back. From verified encounters with Billy the Kid, to building schools and hospitals in the Wild West, to challenging the government and military for fair treatment of Native Americans, Sister Blandina’s impact is still being felt today.
“Sister Blandina’s story is one of service above self, which really struck a chord with us at the station. To be able to create this incredible program based on her life and experiences is very gratifying and we are thrilled the hard work of the team has been recognized with so many prestigious honors,” said Stefan Schellhas, VP/General Manager.
WKRC’s award-winning special, with host Bob Herzog, produced by Patricia McGeever, with photojournalism and editing by Byran Dykes, and graphics from Ricky Henry, can be seen here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LxbVEMZpJ3M&t=149s
“Whether she is eventually canonized or not, Sister Blandina Segale lived a fearless life of service. Getting to help tell that kind of story is a gift,” said Herzog.
